About Beryl

Beryl was born and lived in Shepley Road Audenshaw. She went to Pitt Street school and spent a lot of time in her childhood with her aunty who she loved dearly EDITH PINNINGTON, in whose grave her remains are now interred at AUDENSHAW Cemetery. Beryl had a very happy childhood, especially after moving to a new house on Denshaw Ave Audenshaw. On leaving School Beryl wanted to train as a telephonist but instead started work as a weaver at Christies Mill Ashton Old Rd Droylsden working shifts of 6-2 and 2-10 walking each way from home to work. Some time later Beb got a job at Ashton Bros Wharf Mill in HYDE, again walking to and from the same shifts up and down KINGSTON BREW (not many do that these days). In Mid 1957 BEB was crossing Crown Point (unusually without her close friend and workmate JUNE ROBINSON)and decided to go into BOBs Cafe a favourite venue of young people then and it was empty apart from Steve and May behind the counter. May introduced them and, in spite of knowing Steve was a disabled war pensioner and in rehab she was in no way deterred by this and a great bond and love blossomed that became the start of our life together and, later, on March 29th 1958 BEB and Steve got Married at St Hildas Church Audenshaw. A lot of things happened before then like getting A Tandem so we could get out and about together, foolishly one day riding to Ainsdale on a hot summer day when BEB got a bad dose of sunstroke the results of which stayed with her all her life but, BEB being BEB she handled it. She was always a happy and cheerful lass who had masses of Friends and NO Foes. Before we got married steve had a lttle bed-sit on Manchester Road Denton and BEB would run from her Late Shift to have a bit of supper with Steve. Everything to BEB was possible and we went on to find a house at St Philips Park East Gorton where we happily set up home and life was coming together Steve got a job in accounts at Crossley Engines and in Late October GARY was born. Sadly, Unknown to us, BEB had at some stege caught RUBELLA and GARY was seriously afflicted and passed away in PENDLEBURY CHILDRENS HOSPITAL. This was a serious blow to take but with time BEB came to terms with this but could never bear the look or smell of chrysanthemums again. BEB had a way of dealing with every situation and always held her problems inside but would always offer comfort to others her chatty happy nature always on the up. In September 1959 GAVIN was born and BEB embarked on being the best MUM and WIFE ever.going on to have Four more lovely children who in turn gave her eight super Grandchildren. After various changes by work or wish BEB found a house on Lord Derby Road on the rise of Werneth Low Gee Cross and she loved it in spite of the winds and snow in winter, She would look out of the lounge window across Manchester and North Cheshire knowing She had worked hard and achieved something for her children and family. In no time BEB got Steve to build a Double Garage Bedroom and Kitchen on the side. BEB had the home she loved and in spite of having her youngest child not at school (previously she was at home for all the children) decided to go to work again to make the home as she wanted it for us all. Sadly in 1972 Steve had a health problem causing this idyll to come apart and the family moved to a village store which it was hoped BEB could run to keep the family if he didnt recover. Having settle the family well, opened a second shop in the village, with Steve on the mend, everything was turned into chaos by the 3 Day Week and it was decided to sell up and try elsewhere. The business was swapped for a lovely Art-Deco house bordering WORSLEY. With the children being older BEB decided to become a Security and Store Detective at which she became very successful and highly respected by both Police and Employers and Loathed by any Miscreants. Later she took over a Jewelry Shop in OLDHAM travelling daily from WORSLEY. On one occasion when TOMMYFIELDS MARKET had a car-boot day, three Scousers entered the shop, One of them putting a card of Diamond Rings into his coat, thinking BEB hadnt seen him but she blocked the door and BEB as usual was not for letting theft happen tackled the three of them regaining the rings, resulting in Headlines in The Oldham Chronicle "BATTLING BERYL BEATS BURGLARS" which did not surprise anyone who knew her and filling the family with great Pride. As these three found out, not a person to be messed with, but at all other times a lovely friend to have
